Beyond Windrush: Tracing Your African Caribbean Roots

Want to extend your family tree? Struggling to reach ancestors who lived before the birth of your grandparents?

Paul was told that it would be impossible to trace records of slave-ownership let alone his African ancestors enslaved on plantations in Jamaica. “No one had tried because such records did not exist.” In the 1990’s, undeterred, he embarked on a journey of discovery that led from suburban North London to Jamaica and ultimately back to the Gold Coast of Africa; an effort that has brought him international recognition for his breakthroughs in African Caribbean genealogy research.

Tracing your ancestry and finding your roots

There are many ways to engage with Windrush Generation family history. Over the last few years, a wealth of resource material has been made available for tracing family history beyond The Windrush Generation. There are a number of sources which possibly will help point you in the right direction.

Paul will talk about

  • how he traced his roots and his family’s migration down through the generations to Windrush
  • his journey to find his family history as a case study and share his ten hot tips along the way.

Why Family History

Climbing your family tree can strengthen your family relationships as you preserve memories, stories, and photos, and learn how to put flesh back on the bones of your ancestors.

Come and claim your legacy! You will come to understand yourself better as you embark on this remarkable and personal journey.
