For the awareness of African-Caribbean & Asian people

The Youth Anti-Racist Alliance (YARA) in association with African-Caribbean & Asian Societies at 15 Greater London universities will be holding a second conference on the experiences, contribution and prospects for young Black people in the media.

This conference is the third in the series entitled the 'Black Awareness Conferences'. The first entitled Black people in the Media Conference was held at South Bank University, in October 1996 as part of the annual Black History Month in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich and Southwark. The conference attracted over 300 people and high profile guest speaker included Rianna Scipio - television and radio presenter (Black Britain - BBC2 and Choice FM), Annie Stewart - Editor of Voice newspaper, Marc Wadsworth - Chair of National Union of Journalist's Black Members Council, Jasvir Garcha - Head of Advertising Design at Gray Advertising Ltd., Dej Mohoney - Vice President of Business Affairs & News Media Development at Sony Music Entertainment (UK) Ltd. And many more.

Some of the key points that came out of the conference was a need for comprehensive 'monitoring' to see how many Black people are employed, how much Black representation there are in Print Journalism, Television, Film, Radio, Advertising and Music, and where they exist. This is to have a clear picture on which to base a new agenda for Black people in the media. Many felt the media does not reflect Black people or issues, while there is a huge reservoir of talented young people especially in journalism, music, television and film schools. Highly qualified Black people found it very hard to find jobs in the industry and they demanded fairness and equality.

The second conference entitled 'Black Business & Employment conference '97' was held at University of London Union, in May 1997. It attracted over 400 people, high profile guest speakers and many top businesses exhibiting at its Business Fair.

The Media Conference '97 will be an all-day event consisting of an exhibition, plenary and seminar sessions. It will take place on Sunday 26th October 1997 as part of the Black History Month. A performance evening will follow the conference, where up-and-coming as well as established artists will be showing off their talents. The Media Conference '97 will look at many industries of the media including Film & Television, Radio Broadcasting, Music Journalism, Advertising and Multi-Media.

      The Conference

The main aims and objectives of this conference are to:

    • Provide an educational forum that is not provided in educational institutions
    • Present examples of some important contributions made by Black people in the media
    • Encourage young people and in particular Black people to believe in themselves and to achieve their full potential
    • Provide a forum where young people have a chance to debate and draw conclusions about issues that are of concern to them
    • Provide a forum for young people to network and communicate with other young people
    • Present examples of some aspects of racial discrimination faced by Black people in the media that continue to go unrecognised
    • Promote opportunities in the media for young up-and-coming talent.

      Target Audience

The subject covered in this conference will be aimed at young people in further and higher education. Though everyone will be welcome to actively participate, subjects covered will be of particular interest to Black people of African-Caribbean and Asian descent.
