About KelpRa
KelpRa
is a book promotional company specialising in fostering an appreciation
for literature written by African-descended authors.
The company has a solid track record of organising a variety of programmes
that reflect the richness of Black literature and is gaining a reputation
for putting on excellent discussion and panel events that challenge
the conventions of what the public regard as a "book event".
KelpRa was established in September 1998, by Meseret Kentake and was
born out out the highly successful monthly book discussion group (Blackberry)
held at Borders Bookstore, Oxford Street. While chairing these event,
Ms KelpRa (as she is more commonly called)recognised that there was
an essential need for a company that was committed to creating a positive
public focus on "Black" literature.
KelpRa continues to organize regular monthly events at Borders Bookstores,
at both its Oxford Street and Charring Cross Road branches. These events
profile an outstanding and varied list of authors from the UK and the
USA, such as Diran Adebayo, Andrea Levy, Patrick Augustus,
Mike Phillips and Tony Lindsay.
The company hosted the events "Brothers, Lust and Love"
featuring from the USA, William July and "Roots of
Black History" featuring the African American Cultural
Historian, Anthony T. Brown and British based historian, Robin
Walker. which attracted great attendance and press attention.
KelpRa's aim is to continue organising events that are accessible and
dynamic, which will not only optimise publicity for Black writers but
also empower and enlighten the individuals who are in attendance at
these events.
