Hooligan
or disaffected youth?
RAGAMUFFIN, the rude boy returns - more provocative, sassy and
contentious than ever!
Hi
Did
you know that the last time Ragamuffin played at the Theatre Royal the
audience raised the roof. The buzz was electrifying.
Well, at long last, it's back by popular demand for 4 exciting weeks.
The
Guardian described it as "a reggae
dance hall theatre piece" and the Birmingham Post
called it "a contentious play with a
political message". It is in fact both and it adds
up to a compelling, energetic musical which you'll find hugely entertaining.
Don't
miss it this time. The details of time and prices are all below.
So
what's it all about?... Ragamuffin is a ghetto-style, streetwise youth
who stands on trial in the Supreme Court of African Justice for crimes
against African peoples. Is he, as the Prosecution Counsel poses, responsible
for the current spate of black on black violence and the upsurge of gun
crime; and therefore the ultimate bad boy ...a Ragamuffin? Or is he as
the Defence Counsel poses, a revolutionary struggling for civil rights
and justice?
"Defence
and Prosecution spoke to a rhythmic backing and switched effortlessly
into skilful rapping..." (The Birmingham Post)
Amani
Naphtali
magically weaves into the play the historical events of the 1804 Haitian
slave revolution led by Toussaint L'Overture, and the Broadwater Farm
Riots of 1985 and all the evidence presented, ask you the audience, to
decide if Ragamuffin is guilty.
"Don't
be misled, Ragamuffin is not just a piece of history, but a powerful piece
of entertainment featuring dance, songs and nuff lyrical clash inna DJ
stylee." (Guardian)
Ragamuffin's
multi-talented cast includes, the highly acclaimed, actor and singer Victor
Romero Evans. You may remember Victor from the "Posse"
or Channel 4's very successful TV series, "No Problem".
Reggae fans may also remember his famous rendition 'At the Club'.
DJ Keety General and DJ
Usama will be spinning the tunes and Haitian drummers will
provide the beat to guarantee an awesome evening's entertainment.
