Hiya [SALUTE]

Yes you've guessed it we are on the late shift again, but no big ting… well… new week, new tings, new tings = big tings, remember I said that!!!

Most of you should have heard about the tragic death of 'Left Eye' from TLC… who died in a car crash…Again quality talent taken from us, but everything for a reason, and again I truly believe it's a message to reminds us, you cannot and must not take life for granted, every moment you spend moaning, blaming people for your 'misfortunes', why not spend it appreciating and enjoying life.

[SALUTE], if you are reading this Newsletter, it means you're alive and if you're alive it means you have one more day to make a difference in your life and others. Some people you can help and some you can't… main thing is, help those who want to be helped, and if you need help…. Help your self… do not rely on others…. My point is…No matter 'ow big yuh ting yuh is…. Your life can disappear at anytime. DON'T WASTE IT!!!..... Trust me don't waste it.

Right den, on with the show, we are back on schedule with the newsletter, things have been frantic round here, but once again, many thanks to those who have sent in there bits and bobs of info , NUFF RESPECT! Love you like cook food. Look out for 'Speakout' I would really like your feed back on a particular incident that took place in Brixton also look out for the 'Special Featured' section' If you get the chance give us some feed back on the programme highlighted. I'm bit sceptical about documentaries, they seem to send out the wrong message even though they might be trying to good. Remember... Don't judge a book by its cover, but in the same breath read between the lines and ask yourself, what is the motive behind this documentary.

Once again enjoy!!! and we will chat to you SOON. ;-)

Ju & Caz

TRIBUTES TO SANJAE (click here to view and sign condolence book)

"I was saddened to hear that Sanjae had passed. I was saddened that we were unable to rally together. But, it seems a lot of people like me had our thoughts there but did not act quickly or were always going to do something. I am glad the campaign will go on in her name, and hopefully be able to save other childrens lives who may find themselves in a similar position as Sanjae. I hope the light, that she brought will continue to shine and be a reminder to us all that we have to sit up and pay attention, and relise we all have the power to make a difference if we only
try and yes we can unite.
"

Teresa

"A truly beauitful angel was lost my heart goes out to the family.

"ONE LAST TEAR

"I cry for the world in which I live in, where money means more than life where children are dying and no one is really caring. I cry for the pain and heartbreak that parents like you are going through ,I'll cry one last tear because I know that where there is sorrow there is happiness, for sitting on the right hand of God is our beauitful angel, your baby, Sanjae Lewis."

Nicola

"I'm so sad to here the news Sanjae as I weep for your parents at their precious loss. I believe your spirit is alive & will help to continue the apparent struggle for black people to support one another in times of need.

"We have to teach our children & ourselves, that our children's well being is more valuable than material goods, which we buy into without question. Hopefully, in you closing your eyes, we'll open ours.

"PEACE & BLESSINGS little one.xxxxx"

Julia

"My condolences to the Lewis family. I am realy sad that we could not raise sufficent funds in time that would of given Sanjae a chance. I will continue to give my full support to the fund so that others might benefit."

Raphael Stanislaus

"Sanjae achieved alot in her short life, more than many older than herself have - she brought a community together and for that we should be grateful to her."

Jacqueline

"How terribly sad. I was so sure that we would be in time to save this brave little girl.

My heart goes out to the family and know that we are all shocked and saddened by your loss."

BLACK/MIXED RACE EGG DONOR NEEDED

As you know, Debbie Brown is desparately seeking an egg donor. A few of you conscious ladies have stepped forward to assist Debbie with her plight and only time will tell as to how far things will go; hopefully all the way!

Originally responses to Debbie's request were a bit slow off the mark but eventually the ladies who came forward proved to be serious about matters and are liaising with Debbie on what the process entails exactly. Debbie kindly supplied me with an update, and this is what she had to say:-

"It seems that the fact that the appeal was posted a further couple of weeks, prodded the ladies into action - thanks. Also, although there is a national shortage of Black Egg Donors, many women do not feel compelled to help unless they have some idea of whom the recipient will be - understandable. I just think myself very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to use the Blacknet network to reach a number of conscious women and man! :-)

"I will of course keep you updated on progress. Please feel free to give a general update in the Weekly Newsletter. It may prompt other Sisters out there to consider offering help to someone else - there are many Black women in the same situation, but maybe not having exposure to a medium such as Blacknet are isolated and do not know how to progress their search - once again I think myself very fortunate.

"Once again, many, many thanks. Keep up the good work.

'DUTTY BABYLON!!'

"Yesterday (Apr 26 02) it was all good, the sun was shining and I was feeling xtra good! I went to sainsbury's to get a couple of items but there was a problem with the til, I waited for ages, but to cut a long story short I ended up getting the stuff for free! Secretly I thought to myself.... It's about time I got something for free considering all the rahtid money Iv'e spent here in the past!

"Anyway I went into the market to get some skellion and thyme cos I was really in the mood for rice and peas. I was leaving the market and walking past iceland (in Brixton) when 3 beast (police) struggled with a brother and eventually pinned him to the ground really brutally. This happened right at my feet so naturally I enquired "hey! What the fu#k are you doing to him? One of the beast tried to style ot out by shouting at the brother "spit the drugs out,if you spit the out you'll make it less difficult for yourself" (YEAH RIGHT) At this point I can only speak for myself, I reckon that I could personally tell if somebody had drugs in their mouth, especially if there were 3 beast holding onto their neck at the time! (ther's no excuse for brutality anyway, even if the brother was doing a dirty government job!)

"By this time a crowd had assembled and the people were demanding that the police justify themselves,(the brother was on the floor crying in pain) I started to tell the crowd about the way police brutalise and kill Africans all the time, and how they use violence or the threat of violence to control
us. Peeps were really listening to what I was saying so the female beast tried to say to me "get your facts right love!" so I did just that and I gave all the ugly details about the last two murders by brixton police, the conspiracy, the cover ups, and the fact that they don't even register people that are being arrested because there are to many to record in the Brixton area (predominantly black) so the police literally kidnapp people from off the streets.

"People started to get confident and join in, withen seconds there were re-einforcements (2 vans anf 4 cars). As they put the hancuffed brother into the back of the van therw was another commotion, six beast started ruinning towards footlocker. The crowd followed them, but suddenly they stopped, at their feet a young brother (19yrs) was laying at the side of the road, he had been hit by a bus.I'm not sure if they were chasing him or what, but anyway he was still concious and was taken away to hospital.

"A really strong sista started questioning the police hard- regarding the yout that they had arressted, I went over and joined her, the beast told us that he couldn't speak to us because we were being "irrational" but the people were listening. Then out of nowhere comes this assimilated, bootlickin,
slavemasters pet and tries to seperate us from the crowd saying that we'll get arrested for trying to incite a riot, that we're trying to make trouble and make the situation worse!

"People who could here what was going on said that they felt we were in the right, the woman sarcastically said "I cold have helped you, you don't know what I do for a living" (she had obviously got some stripes from the slavemaster of the 'big house' that she worked in) I said to her "yeah you're probably an undercover officer" with that she rolled her eyes, sighed, shook her head and said "poor black people."

"When I got home I couldn't get it out of my head all I could think about was the brother in handcuffs with his face being pushed down on the floor. Seeing it happen right at my feet really disturbed me.

"Have any of you experienced this or something similar?

"I think you're supposed to ask why the person is being arrested, and take the badge numbers of the beast, but then what? That's what I did anyway.

"THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES.............."

"Dear Caz/ Junior

"Our failure to raise the necessary monies for the Sanjae Lewis appeal provides an opportunity to start analysing and discussing why we fail to support ourselves as a community. It raises many issues, for example, Anthea Bright mentioned the names of a few high profile Black people who should have been able to raise the money. This begs a couple of questions:

"1. How does she know they didn't contribute?
2. Why should rich/ high profile Black people be more responsible for looking after the community than the rest of us?

"If we had all given the price of a packet of cigarettes or one drink, the money would have been raised within a week. SIMPLE! But, tragically, we are once again forced to deal with the unpalatable truth of our complete inability to act with any degree of collectivism. Should we be surprised? NO! - we are much too busy trying to murder each other, to be too worried about trying to actually save a life.

"Do I sound like a cynic? Damn right! I have personal experience of the frustration of trying to create a supportive, organised and productive group of Black people. History is filled with inspirational examples of Black people working together to achieve great things, but sadly, we have forgotten, or chosen to ignore those lessons.

"I wonder if there really is a Black 'community' in this country. What exactly does this definition mean? In reality, we seem to be groups of separate communities, and we certainly don't help ourselves to overcome this. For example, living in Birmingham, It's frustrating how Black media tends to largely ignore things happening outside the M25. The large numbers of people living in Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, etc are often invisible to our Black media and if we cannot even engage with each other on that level, what chance do we have of pulling together on a national basis in times of need? It would have been interesting to know how many Black people in 'country' were fully aware of and contributed to Sanjae's appeal."

"My daughter goes to Tabernacle School, the one that as been in the press now for about a month.

"Basically my daughter's school is being evictated from its premises for a DJ studio. We have been in the Voice and the New Nation Newspaper.

"I as a parent am begging for help from the black community to help the school as at this moment we need funds for a building as we belive the school should continue. We know God is on our side.

"Sorry for taking up your time but all am asking is help our children.

"Please contact me if you want to talk more about the school, or give me ideas how to help the school as we are desparete.

"Many thanks."

Lawless London: Gun Crime
TX: approx 1700 ( check newspaper) Sunday May 5th LWT ( ITV London Region)

Gun Crime in London has reached epidemic proportions. Last year 21 people died in 'black on black' related shootings. Shooting incidents are running at almost two a day.

The London Programme talks to the victims of the gun culture in which they live.

We see the deadly weapons they are carrying on our streets and into the clubs.

We hear how they're being used both in drugs wars, and trivial personal arguments.

And we examine if "gangsta" music has had an influence on the young men who regularly carry guns.

This documentary contains comments from British Heavyweight and Commonwealth Champion Danny Williams and Dianne Abbott MP amongst others. We have also spoken to the family of DJ Village and other families that have been victims of gun crimes in London.

RACISTS ABUSE VICTIM WINS £10,000 PAY-OUT (continued...)

A BLACK electrician endured a six-month ordeal of racial abuse at the hands of a workmate who called him an ape and pelted him with stones, an employment tribunal was told.

Stephen Okuefuna said he suffered a barrage of race hatred from a colleague on a building site.

Yesterday, Mr Okuefuna was awarded £10,000 compensation by the tribunal.

The father-of-five from Runcorn, Cheshire, claimed he was persecuted by a labourer who was only ever known to him as "Brian".

Mr Okuefuna, 48, recalled how he was confronted by racist jibes every day he worked at the building site in Allerton, Liverpool.

He told a Liverpool tribunal he started working on a contract for C&E Installations Ltd in November 2000.

After a month of abuse, he complained to his bosses.

Mr Okuefuna told the hearing: "When I told my boss, Alan Eastup, about Brian's racist abuse he just laughed saying I was big enough to sort it out myself.

"All day, Brian would have digs at me and he even called my wife a ginger-haired slag because he didn't agree with mixed race marriages.

"Brian was very nasty and horrible with his mouth.

"After speaking to Mr Eastup, I didn't know where to turn and the abuse just got worse and worse."

He said he was sacked in April last year when Brian hid his sandwiches for 20 minutes.

Mr Okuefuna said: "It was a trivial thing that sparked off the fight. He hid my sandwiches for 20 minutes and he knew we only had half-an-hour to eat our dinner.

"That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I didn't want a fight with him but he just made me so angry.

"On the site, Brian was only like this with me and with everyone else he was nice as pie. If there was a picture of an ape in the newspaper he would laugh and point at me.

"Eventually the everyday abuse was more than I could bear."

After the fight, Mr Okuefuna walked out of the firm, telling Mr Eastup he could no longer tolerate the racist abuse.

Mr Eastup told him he would move him to another site but a few days later Mr Okuefuna received a phone call from his boss telling him he had lost his £350-a-week job. He said: "When Alan Eastup rung me to tell me I was sacked, he told me he knew what Brian was like.

"Management knew Brian was a racist but they refused to do anything about it. Alan Eastup promised to move me to another site but this never happened."

The tribunal ruled Mr Okuefuna was a victim of race discrimination and awarded him £10,000 in compensation and a loss of earnings of £4,400.

Tribunal chairman Eryl Lloyd-Parry said: "When Mr Okuefuna approached Alan Eastup he treated this as a light matter and did not manage the serious situation.''

After the tribunal, Mr Okuefuna said: "I am so glad the tribunal recognised the trauma I went through. Nobody should have to put up with treatment like this."

C&E Installations Ltd, of Warrington, were not represented at the hearing. Companies House revealed that it has no record of any limited company named C&E Installations Ltd based in Warrington.

However, Mr Okuefuma confirmed the phone number of his former employers was the same as that used by the firm CE Electrical Installations, of Warrington.

Alan Eastup, of CE Electrical Installations, said: "I've never heard of Stephen Okuefuma and nobody of that name has ever worked for me.

"We are CE Electrical Installations. If someone of that name was mentioned in a tribunal it must be another Alan Eastup.

"It is nothing to do with me or my company."

A Commission for Racial Equality spokesman said: "This case is a sad reminder that we cannot be complacent about racism in Britain today."

APPEAL FOR COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM YOUTH SCHEME

Police are still appealing for information and witnesses after thousands of pounds worth of computer equipment intended for Southwark youngsters was stolen.

Between Friday 12th and Monday 15th April, £35,000 worth of computer systems were stolen from the 'Karrot scheme' bus in Mandella Way, SE1

The computers were set to be presented to youngsters from Southwark under the 'Karrot Scheme' launched in December 2001.

The 'Karrot Scheme' is an incentive for young people between 11 and 15 years across the Borough of Southwark. The scheme aims to reward young people for good behaviour.

The theft occurred between 16:00 hours on April 12 2002 and 13:00 hours on April 15 2002.

The stolen property consists of 12 Dell Viewsonic VE156MD Flatscreen plasma monitors; 12 Dell keyboards; and 12 Dell CPUs.

The CID at Southwark is appealing for information regarding the theft and whereabouts of the stolen property. They would also like to hear from anyone who has been offered equipment similar to the property stolen.

Anyone with information should contact the CID on 020 7232 6249; or anonymously Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

GHANAIAN VISITORS KEEN TO DO BUSINESS

A DELEGATION from the Ghanaian government is touring Merseyside today seeking to establish business links with local companies.

The visit has been organised by Appiah Kufuor, a Knowsley council officer whose brother is the President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor.

The High Commissioner, Issac Osei, is leading the party, who are due to meet business leaders at the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, before a meeting with Merseyside Police Chief Constable Norman Bettison.

Later, they are visiting the University of Liverpool, as part of an effort to increase the number of Ghanaians who study in the city.

This evening, Mr Osei will address members of Liverpool's Ghanaian community before a reception with officials from Knowsley council.

The President was elected in December, 2000, in the first democratic and peaceful transition from one party to another in West Africa.

Appiah Kufuor has worked as principal regeneration officer at Knowsley for ten years. He was born in Ghana but moved to this country 26 years ago to continue his education.

He says his brother is aiming to rid Ghana of corruption, a lack of transparency and bad governance.

The President is determined to increase investment and utilise outside expertise to help rebuild the country and tackle its enormous economic problems.

Mr Kufuor believes the Merseyside visit can play a major part in achieving Ghana's goals.

He said: "There is considerable potential for investment in areas like hotels, airports, telecommunications, industry, tourism and information technology.

"We want to build upon and develop an airport in Kumafi, turning it from a provincial one to international status, so we want to speak to officials from John Lennon airport to get some technical expertise to help us out.

"The other main area is telecommunications because our telecom system is being privatised, so we are very keen for companies to invest in that area."

Mr Kufuor said the meeting with the Chief Constable was important as the President tries to develop a more " professional" force in Ghana.

He added: "They are looking at training and logistical needs and want to establish and create links between the two forces to network and exchange ideas. We need assistance to create a crime laboratory in Ghana.

"My brother has a very tough job.

"The main priority is to create investment, jobs and links, real issues to which the people of Merseyside can really relate.

"He wants to create a different kind of Africa, he wants Ghana to be a place where industry wants to invest and where the rule of law applies.

"He wants it to be a model for other African countries to follow and wants it to be seen as a gateway to Africa.

STATEMENT BY SIR JOHN STEVENS, COMMISSIONER OF THE METROPOLITAN POLICE RE: Damilola

The lack of justice for Mr and Mrs Taylor, their family and friends is a matter of deep regret both for me personally and the Metropolitan Police Service as a whole.

The investigative and prosecution team worked tirelessly in pursuit of their son’s attackers and they are as saddened as anyone that there has been no conviction for his murder.

Interviewing a 13 year-old child in traumatic and challenging circumstances is not easy. We need to find a better way of dealing with such vulnerable young witnesses and offenders.

Three weeks ago I set in train an internal review of how such individuals are handled. Now that the trial is over this work can make a formal start but it needs an independent viewpoint from beyond the police service.

After consultation with the Home Secretary, the Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Mayor of London I have invited the Bishop of Stepney, John Sentamu, to chair an oversight panel.

The other members of the panel will be David Blakey, HM Inspector of Policing, and Perry Nove, the retiring Commissioner of the City of London Police. The panel will advise me and the Metropolitan Police Authority as to what lessons may be learnt by the police and the Criminal Justice System in future cases of a similar nature. They will also provide a link to the CPS review established by the Attorney General.

Crimes involving young victims and young offenders with young witnesses are among the most difficult of cases to solve. Any opportunity to help improve the delivery of justice must be grasped with both hands. With this tragic case fresh in our minds, I would like this review to be completed by mid summer.

NIGERIA MOURNES FOR DAMILOLA

The London court verdict that set two brothers free over the murder of 10-year-old Damilola Taylor made headline news in his home country Nigeria.

"British Court Frees Damilola's suspected killers," was the front page headline of Nigeria's leading newspaper, the Guardian.

Many young Nigerian's with dreams of travelling abroad have keenly followed the Damilola issue since he bled to death in the stairwell of a block of flats on the North Peckham estate, London, in November 2000.

Damilola lived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, before travelling to Britain for a better life.

Like Damilola, thousands of youths in the city are in search of a better life and they see Europe - especially Britain - as the ultimate destination.

For many of these youths, the Damilola issue has negatively changed their perception of Britain.

Dream gone

Kolade Busari, a 22-year-old school leaver seeking university admission in Europe, said he now perceives Britain as an unsafe place.

"Before Damilola's death, my dream was to study electronic engineering in Britain, but now that dream is gone," he said.

Busari has shifted his quest for a better life to France.

Safiya Yahaya, a 21-year-old polytechnic graduate, sees Damilola's death and the freedom of his suspected killers as the product of hatred for Nigerians in Britain.

For her, British hatred for Nigerians dates back to more than a century ago when the British arrived Nigeria to colonise the country.

"They treated us badly during the colonial days and things have not changed up till now," she says.

She says even in the face of hardship caused by a high crime rate, unemployment and inflation in Nigeria, Nigerians at home don't face the kind of indignities their counterparts in Britain face.

Greener pastures

But for many other youths, the Damilola issue is not enough to kill their dream of going to Britain for a better life.

A visit to the visa section of the British embassy in Lagos proves this.

The place is crowded every morning with youths seeking visas for Britain.

"They want to leave Nigeria for greener pastures, everyone including the best brains want to leave," says Linus Ukamba, general secretary of Nigeria's workers union.

He attributes the desperation to leave the country in spite of uncertainties abroad to the low wage in Nigeria. Many Nigerians earn as low as little as $50 US a month.

The low wage contrasts sharply to what Nigerians abroad earn.

Sports pages of Nigerian newspapers are daily inundated with reports of foreign-based Nigerian footballers earning millions of dollars.

Many Nigerian children of Damilola's age hope to play football in Europe when they grow up.

These children are a common sight in Lagos playing football on street corners.

Eleven-year-old Tunde Benjamin, who plays football at a street corner in Agege, a Lagos suburb, says in future he wants to play football in Britain.

"I want to be like Kanu Nwankwo the Arsenal striker," he said.

SCHOOLS PRAISED FOR BLACK ACHIEVEMENTS

School inspectors have commended nine schools in England for the good performance of their black Caribbean pupils.

They have analysed the secrets behind the successes of the schools and the pupils to try to improve the achievements of black children in general.

The schools - mainly in Greater London and the Midlands - were selected because their results buck the trend of under-achievement among African-Caribbean children.

Six secondary schools and three primary schools were singled out for praise by the schools watchdog in England, Ofsted.

High expectations

The inspectors said the schools achieved their success for a number of reasons including strong leadership and a culture of achievement where high expectations were backed up by intensive support.

African-Caribbean children generally do much worse at school than white or Asian children.

Exam results for 2000 show that among white pupils, the number getting five good GCSEs was 50%, for Asian students it was 49% but for black students it was 37%.

African-Caribbean pupils are also between three and six times more likely to be expelled from school.

The government recently set up a task force to try to tackle the under-achievement of African-Caribbean children.

The problems were highlighted at a conference organised by Labour MP Diane Abbott, who this week visited St Bonaventure's School to see how it helps all children to succeed.

Tribute to heads

The chief inspector of school, Mike Tomlinson, said the new reports were a great tribute to the head teachers and staff of the nine schools.

"They are doing the right things - and doing them well - for all their pupils, but in addition they are closely in tune with the particular communities which they serve.

"There are powerful messages here for all schools, if we are to take educational inclusion as seriously as we need to."

The secondary schools commended by Ofsted were:

St Thomas the Apostle College, Southwark
Our Lady's Convent High School, Hackney
St Martin-in-the-Fields High School, Lambeth
Winchmore School, Enfield
St Bonaventure's School, Newham
Heath Park High School, Wolverhampton.
The three primary schools were:
Sudbourne Primary, Lambeth
Moat Farm Junior, Sandwell
Allfarthing, Wandsworth.

It's time to take a little break [SALUTE] and put your brain to task with some light mental stimulation with this weeks teasers.

Teaser 1

Several hundred years ago, a band of explorers were embarking on a sea journey to the far north which would last for three weeks. During this time their staples would consist of crackers and dried meat. They couldn't cook aboard ship for fear of
fire. When they arrived, they planned a celebration of roast lamb. The problem they faced was keeping the meat fresh for three weeks. If they tied a rope to the meat and trailed it in
the cold water, predator fish would eat it. If they took ice and snow with them to keep the meat cool, the ice and snow would melt and the ship would fill with water. How could they keep the meat fresh until they arrived at their destination?

Think on these things...

"We are what we pretend to be...so be careful." (Kurt Vonnegut, Writer)

"The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it- but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor." (Oliver Wendell Holmes)

"Love your enemies, for they tell you your faults." (Benjamin Franklin)

"If you're still hanging onto a dead dream of yesterday, laying flowers on its grave by the hour, you cannot be planting the seeds for a new dream to grow today." (Joyce Chapman, Author)

"Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts. For out of them will grow all delightful conditions, your world will at last be built." (James Allen)
