Hi
[SALUTE], Another week begins, and I hope you are feeling good and
raring to go. I hope that each day when you wake up you realise
it is another day to make a difference to your life, it is another
chance for you to set and start making steps to achieving your goals.
Without goals of some sort you have no direction and no direction
leads to emptiness, emptiness leads to frustration, frustration
leads to unhappiness. What do you prefer?
I was watching
the marathon on Sunday to see if I could see anybody I knew in the
race, and then it clock to me that Bwwwoy! At lot of black people
I know don't even see daylight on a Sunday, so I was wasting my
time! Just out of interest, did you actually take part in the marathon?
Let us know, and tell us your experience, was you running for charity
or was you running to gain a likle stamina ;-) or was you running
believing you could win? Email us at cazandjunior@blacknet.co.uk.
Straight down
to biz, once again we have lots of info for you, remember if you
don't have time to read it online, simply print it off and when
you have a likle break, take it out (the newsletter that is) and
enjoy! ;-) A lot of info has been provided by people like yourself
and we continue to encourage you to post us your articles, snip
bits, request, reviews whatever it maybe you feel will contribute.
Remember as always, please pass it on to your family, friends and
colleagues or someone you feel may benefit.
We're off [SALUTE],
have a great week and we will catch you on the flip side!
Until next week...
take good care of yourself and remember to drop us a line at any
time with your suggestions and/or comments.

IN
MEMORY OF SANJAE LEWIS

Beloved
daughter of Sandra and Lloyd
Sister of Nathan, Dean, Sarah, Christine, Dwyane and Omar
Little Princess of the Community
Words
cannot begin to express the immense grief and sadness I feel at
the loss of Sanjae. If I hurt as much as I do, then the feelings
and emotions running through the Lewis family must exceed that of
mine tenfold.
Anger,
pain, dissapointment, frustration and guilt are just a few of the
emotions I have experienced since Sanjae's death. I'm empty and
numb. Why did we allow this beautiful child to die without giving
her the opportunity of undergoing the operation? Who knows, maybe
she would not have survived it, but we will never know now because
we did not afford her that chance.
I
personally grew extremely close to Sanjae, having spent time with
her at home prior to her stay at Great Ormond Street Hospital, reading
her stories, chatting and playing with her, and lately caring for
her during her stay in hospital. My relationship with the entire
Lewis family, especially her mum Sandra, is akin to that of my own
family, and my love for them all no less.
If
you were at the Memorial Service on Monday 22 April, you too would
have felt the grave sadness of Sanjae's passing. The Tributes were
so powerful, especially that of Kwaku, even the Minister (Reverend
Elaine Jones) and her assistant cried! I certainly could not contain
my composure and emotions when I took the stand to say my piece,
blubbering and sobbing like a child as I spoke to the congregation
- and for that I make no apologies, nor feel embarassed!
My
intention is to fly out to Jamaica this Friday to join the Lewis
family to lay Sanjae to rest beside her sister Jahna, whose live
was also claimed by the killer disease, fibrosing alveolitis and,
I can tell you now, I'm not looking forward to it, as I know that
this will finally be the end in terms of not being able to see her
again. I suppose I took comfort in knowing that she was in the Chapel
of Rest and I could visit her any time I wanted, but now the time
is drawing painfully near when that will be no more.
I
had the pleasure of going shopping with Sandra to buy an outfit,
fitting for a princess for Sanjae (tiara included), and of course
you know it was pink - her favourite colour. I also had the honour
of dressing her which is the most moving experience I have ever
encountered in my whole, entire life. That, I will never forget
and, although it sadened me greatly, it was one that I am pleased
I took part in.
There
is so much to be said, then again words fail me. But I do have a
little message for sweet, sweet Sanjae...
Darling
Angel
You
are at peace now, free from pain and suffering, and with your Maker.
Your time here on earth was short lived but you brought so much
joy and happiness to your family, and united so many individuals
who rallied to help save you. I'm sorry we didn't raise the funds
in time to send you to America, but God knows I, and hundreds of
others, tried our best. I keep asking myself why you were taken
away so soon, but perhaps that is the way it was meant to be. Maybe
you were sent here for a specific purpose - to open our eyes and
make us wake up. Give us the strength and guidance to continue in
our endeavurs to make a difference in our community; to learn to
trust and help each other, to lend support to those in need, to
show compassion, understanding and tolerance.
You
have touched the hearts of so many people, worldwide, and you will
remain in our minds and hearts until we meet again.
I
love and miss you dearly Sanjae - may you rest in perfect peace.
Caroline

Painful
parting
To bitter to forget
Those who loved you dearly
Are the ones who cant forget
We often sit and think of you
And think of how you died
To think you could say goodbye
Before you closed your eyes
Too dearly loved to be forgotten
Your life is a beautiful memory
Your absence a silent grief
I ask for happiness for you
Our hearts will be near you
At the start and end of each day
PLEASE
CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE SANJAE LEWIS TRUST. Although
the original appeal campaign was for Sanjae, the Trust will continue
in the same vein, to provide funds for medical research, treatment,
support and relief of suffering to children with fibrosing
alveolitis. Keep those donations coming - there are other little
Sanjae's out there who need our help - don't let the same thing
happen again - play your part in creating an institution to which
those in need can turn.

| "I
keep looking at myself in the mirror and hating the person who's
staring back, why! Because since January when I first heard
about Sanjae Lewis, my initial thought was "I have to do
something, anything!" But what did I do, NOTHING, and it
seems that is the case for a lot of the Black community!!!
"I
kept telling myself, I'll give something and then something
would come up and I'll just put it at the back of my mind.
Now its too late! I have to look at myself each day knowing
that I not only let Sanjae down, but I let myself down.
"I
feel sadness that we as a community could not come together
for one of our own. It is times like this that the phrase
"BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL" doesn't quite seem true!"

"I
was deeply saddened to hear about Sanjae's death. I won't even
pretend that I know what her parents must be going through,
having lost 1 child before. My thoughts, sympathy & prayers
are with them. Pleased to know that the fund will be continued
though."

"Please
can you send my condolences to the Lewis Family at their time
of grief. My prayers and thoughts are with them at this time
and may they gain strength in knowing that people who didn't
know them as a family were supporting and hoping with them.
God bless them all.

"Am
very sadden by the death of Sanjae, despite the hard work
in fundraising,
as you said this must continue, so that her death will not
be in vain. Although no one is too blame, and many have devoted
time and effort, this is a time when we should ALL
put aside whatever differences, and REALLY HELP EACH OTHER
WHEN IN NEED, because if we dont WHO WILL?
"Do
we stll make our donations payable at Barclays, or is there
another
account?
"Very
much appreciate all the info sent. Sometimes i wonder if I/we
could have done more, there again who knows?
"Regards"

2 hear about the death of Sanjae Lewis I am so devastated at
the death that it brang tears 2 my eyes. I am young and this
news really touched me so many people are dying in the world
of diseases. my sorrows go out to the parents and family of
Sanjae they must be so distraught at this time in hand." |

"Thank
you for informing me about little Sanjae. Sometimes we can
be made to feel inadequate...but must realise that death may
not be a bad thing but a new beginning and the end of pain.
"Sanjae was and angel on earth and is now one in heaven..it
is not a loss but a deliverence from the darkness of not knowing,
when your body is not well..into the light of Gods release.
Sanjae will always be in our hearts and remembered."

| "Monday
15 April 2002 was a sad day for all of us, to hear of the loss
of our beautiful sister Sanjae, my prayers goes out to her mother,
father, her siblings and family may God protect them during
this time of sadness. I pray by the grace of God that they will
find inner strength and faith to keep going and to build from
the strength their gain from being with Sanjae and that her
memory will live on through the Sanjae Trust and we the community
continue to pull together and build the Sanjae Trust so that
no other child has to go through what Sanjae went through. God
blessed Sanjae to be on this earth for a short time and to leave
a mark, we the community must not allow the Sanjae Trust to
die, because through the Trust Sanjae lives on.
"May
God bless you all and keep the strength going.

To
Sandra & Lloyd, their six beautiful children, Nathan,
Dean, Sarah, Christine, Dwayne and Omar, and their niece Sanya.
We will never know the anguish that you feel at present and
know that words cannot fill the empty void in your hearts
now that Sanjae has gone. But we pray that you take some comfort
in knowing that we are here for you, and always will be. Sanjae
is with us all and will remain so until such time as we meet
with her again. Her passing is not in vain; we should take
strength from this blow that fate has dealt you yet again
and remain true to the cause - SANJAE
WILL LIVE ON THROUGH THE TRUST AND REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER
MORE.

Dear
Caz and Junior,
First
of all let me say that you are both doing a heavy job in keeping
the black community up-to-date with the goings on in our very
own community. Thank you.
It
was painful to hear the death of little Sanjae Lewis, and
my sympathy goes out to her parents and family. But it also
angers me that they didn't receive the money before her death.
The reason why this angers me is because if it were a White
Child needing the organ transplant it would be all over the
national and regional news and newspapers.
I
recently went to the NUS annual conference in Blackpool where
for the past three years the black student alliance have been
petitioning the NUS executive council for a full time paid
black students officer. The NUS has was establish all of 80
years ago, and black students make up 16% of those attending
university so why has it taken so long? Black people are always
and will always be seen as second class citizens in this country.
I mean, the president of the NUS refused to
acknowledge that we needed a Full time Paid students officer
to represent us. I am a student aged 21, and I think im worth
more than the 10% discount card the NUS grace us with.
The
conference was for 4 days and we were given 30 minutes in
which to give our manifesto for a black students officer,
and
then there was also an opportunity for someone to speak against
it, I couldn't believe it when it came to voting some students
voted against it. If their is a Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual
officer, a Women's Officer and Students with Disabilities
Officer all full time and paid, why not a Black Students Officer?
Anyway a Black student officer was voted in, but as you know
there is always a down side. We have an officer, but please
tell me how are they supposed to adequately do their job if
they are not supplied with an office, computer or any staff,
it was pathetic, because the exec claimed that there was no
room in their budget for this funding, and they basically
said we should be grateful to get the full time paid officer
anyway.
As
you may have realised I left the 4 day Conference VEX. But
sometimes I have to say I don't blame the non black people,
reason being, black people as a whole do not help themselves.
For
example with Sanjae Lewis, why wasn't the £320,000 raised
in time for her transplant operation? Look at the amount of
High profile black people there is in the British media today.
People like, Ian Wright, Lennox Lewis, Trisha, Moira Stewart,
Ainsley Harriot, Chris Eubanks. The money needed for this
little girl's transplant wouldn't have even dented their pockets,
so why didn't they make a contribution. When it was a little
white girl a well known figure in the media donated the whole
amount for her operation. Its sad. As the President of the
African Caribbean Society at my university in Birmingham,
we organized a fundraiser, as students we don't get much but
we made our contribution.
I
remember watching a celebrity game show in which the winners
and losers played for money to go to their favorite charity.
There was a black celebrity and their charity money went to
"creative writing" or something like that. When
do you ever see black celebrities saying "my favorite
charity is the SICKLE CELL foundation". That's a disease
unique to black and asian people yet we do not help ourselves.
Its
so true when they say Charity begins at home, but as a community
why are we so unsupportive?

KEEPING
IT REAL
"Is
it just me or do any of the other listeners find it disturbing
that Air Jamaica or should that be 'Authentic', 'Just like
back home'
"Air
Jamaica, seem incapable of using authentic Jamaicans ( or
people of Jamaican parentage) to do their adverts. Correct
me if I'm wrong, but the latest series of ads sound like they're
being done by Felix Dexter. No disrespect to him cos work
is work. But as someone of Jamaican parentage it's instantly
apparent when someone is ' trying' to speak Jamaican and extremely
annoying when done in a serious context as opposed to a humourous
sketch for example ( which is why How Stella Got Her Groove
Back was difficult viewing). Maybe on Capital or Virgin you
could get away with that but on Choice I think it's an insult
to Jamaican listeners. What makes it even worse is when straight
after an Air Jamaica ad, you hear an ad for a play like Forbidden
Love, with authentic Jamaicans involved. It must feel like
a kick in the teeth to those actors. How would Nigerians feel
if a Jamaican was doing ads for their national airline? Air
Jamaica needs to buck up it's ideas and get real. Makes you
wonder who they'll use for their next set of ads, Ali G maybe?????????

| "Hi
Caz & Junior,
"Thank
you for all the info e-mails that youv'e been sending.
"The
issue that has been really bugging me is that over the past
two weeks I have seen TWO documentries about black youth in
London, the first was two Thursdays ago on Channel 4 and it
follwed a day in the life of a few black brothers in Brixton.
All of them, but one, had one thing in common, they were all
young teens, out of school, getting no form of education and
were complaining that nothing was happening for them in their
lives.
"How
do they honestly expect to get something positive going on
for them if all they are doing is walking around Brixton Rd
all day smoking weed when they should be getting an education
and making something out of themselves?!
"As
black people, I feel, that it is time we stopped blaming everything
on 'white people' and 'society' holding us down and start
taking responsibility for our own actions. We all know that
as black people we have to work that extra harder to achieve
our goals, but hard work never hurt no one and I speak from
experience when I say that.
"Out
of all my friends, all those ones that work hard, all of them
have good jobs and are achieving their goals.
"Instead
of complaining why not do something about it to make a positive
change?!"

3
KINGS OF COMEDY NIGHT OUT
First
of all may I say a big Thank you to all at Blacknet for the
tickets to see "The 3 Kings of Comedy".
The night
was great, all 3 comedians were 1st class and all having their
differnet styles. There were of course the hecklers within
the audience but this added variety & spice to the show
and I feel confident in saying that a good time was had by
all.
My partner
and I both had our own favourite sketches. I, personally,
liked the serious, positive undertones in some sketches. So
whilst people laughed I hope they learned a little something
too. All in all it was nice to see nuff black people in the
place. More black theatre productions like these please!
I had
a great Birthday and this finished it off nicely - thanks
once again.

Just a
brief feedback on the show - I think it was funny, these guys
are really talented. Felix Dexter managed to preform for at
least 30 minutes of standup comedy in an African accent not
to mention that it was interactive with the audience. That
is an attribute of talent.
Roy Diamond,
well! well! what can I say Roy Diamond is comedy. Oh I also
have to mention Curtis Walker.
All in
all it was a good show, so thankyou once again for the prize
and am waiting for this newsletter " where is it ?????"

Events
to look out for
Inspite
of the recent death of brave, 4 year old Sanjae Lewis, this event
will go ahead as scheduled in support of the Trust's continuing
work.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, SUPPORT THIS EVENT!!!
THE
WASHINGTON BROTHERS: "Gots Ta Pay My Taxes" (Wed.
1 May 2002 @ Hackney Empire Bullion Room Theatre, Wilton Way, London
E8)
Fresh from the
Three Kings Comedy Tour, award-winning comedians CURTIS 'the
don' WALKER & MARCUS 'Roy Diamond' POWELL team up
as The Washington Brothers, r&b music legends (in their
own minds), alongside their own live backing band, for a rare musical
comedy treat.
The Washington
Brothers are afro-sporting, flare wearing, black music giants, who've
never received due recognition for originating every popular form
of black music today.
Still touring,
their Bullion Room performance finds them very frustrated - &
very funny - over their lack of recognition. During the show many
a soul classic is given the famous Washington Brothers treatment.
After the show they may well receive lawsuits from every one from
Stevie Wonder to Ja Rule, Luther Vandross and Craig David.
Catch two
black comedy giants in a totally different environment, performing
an original musical comedy in aid of The
Sanjae Lewis Appeal.
For one night
only the Hackney Empire proudly presents The Washington Brothers
on their "Gots TA Pay My Taxes" tour. From
Redneck Alabama, the legendary Earl and Frankie jr are soul's founding
fathers. If there was a soul hit these cats insist they founded
it - but they damn sure didn't get a royalty cheque. Women, drink,
drugs, fighting amongst themselves
is what the brothers do
for recreation. Making sweet music for the ladies is what they do
when they're not in the penitentiary. If you want to hear great
soul - too bad most them cats are dead, you'll have to put up with
The Washington Brothers instead.
Supported by
The Delroy Murray Band.
Tickets: £12.50
(in advance) / £15.00 (on the door). Show: 8.30pm

Miss Brown
Suga in association with Executive Promotions
presents the 1st Annual Glamour Ball. These guys have been on the
promotional circuit in Birmingham for a little while now and have
work with some of the more larger promoters in the West Midlands

to secure the £30 Million Newly refurbished Birmingham
Hippodrome - Hurst Street - China Town - City Centre, which is looking
stunning for the 1st Glamour Ball on the Sat 1st June 2002.
The organisers have told me that they are providing the same sort
of standard, vibe, quality and variety which you would experience
in London, New York, Miami & Las Vegas.
The
dress code is Tuxedo's (Black Tie) for the guys and ladies
well it's all about looking glamorous. The added request is that
guys wear baller hats (trilby's) and ladies wear your Mary J or
J Kay style hats. Just look on the flyer above and you'll see what
they mean, if you don't understand.
Coaches have
been laid on for this event and will be leaving from Coventry 07929
774 346 - Nottingham 07714 122 313- Sheffield 07956 539 968.
This
event kicks off at 9.00pm and finishes at 3.00am which is
pretty good for a Birmingham Event of this level. The selection
of DJ's is a party style set with Mr DJ' Country Man, Levi Washington,
Dave Barret and Robin Holland all of whom are experienced entertainers
on the circuit. Delivering Reggae, Soul, Classic, Slow Jams you
know the rest.

Kickback
Normally
you would find a selection of teasers and brain-benders in this
section, but this week I thought you could use the time to reflect
on the shortcoming of Sanjae Lewis, who lost her brave fight last
week.
It's
not that I want you to dwell on her death [SALUTE] but to consider
the issue of giving. We never know when we will be in need or require
someones help and for the Lewis family to turn to us as a community
- total strangers - to help save the life of their daughter, you
know how desparate they were.
Let
us all contemplate our attitude to sharing and caring for each other.
No matter how proud you may be, solvent or self sufficient, we all
need help at some stage; whether it be from a colleague with our
workload, a porter with a heavy luggage or money from a family member
or friend to cover bills until our next pay day - we've all been
there in one way or another. IF WE DON'T LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER...
THEN WHO WILL!?

Think
on these things...
"So
often we look at a calendar of days as merely a symbol of
the passage of time. We forget why we are on this earth. We
forget that there is a reason for all of the pain and all
of the struggle. We forget that we were put on earth to learn
something. If everything were perfect in this life, we would
never learn anything new. We would not be able to elevate
our spirits through the events that happen to us."
(Lynn V. Andrews)
"You
cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot
help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot help the
poor by destroying the rich. You cannot lift the wage earner
by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot keep out of trouble
by spending more than your income. You cannot further the
brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds. You cannot build
character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and
independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for
them what they could and should do for themselves."
(Abraham Lincoln)
"The
greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without
losing heart." (Robert G. Ingersoll)
"In
about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy."
(Karl Reiland)
"Slow
down and live, for life is too short to be lived fast, and
too precious not to be lived well." (Anon)
