Bob Marley’s fashion-designer daughter Cedella Marley is teaming up with Puma to design the Jamaican track and field team’s kit for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The reggae icon’s daughter will design the entire team’s Olympic, podium and ceremony wear, including that of the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt.
Bolt is the standout performer in the Jamaican team and a global audience will be watching in London 2012 to see if he breaks the world 100m record.
Cedella Marley’s designs have taken inspiration from the “vibrant colours and patterns” of Jamaica, as well as from the country’s African roots.
A track runner in high school, she began designing clothes while she was on tour with Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, a band made up of her brothers and sisters. Report by Marketing Magazine, UK
“It’ll be Grace Jones meets my Dad – very music inspired and a bit retro,” says Marley.
“I really want the clothes to be able to show off every muscle,” she tells Vogue magazine. “The athletes will be doing their job and mine is to make them look good when they win. I’ll be experimenting with prints and colour too – all with a Jamaican feel. I’ll spend a lot of time ensuring everything is technically sound too, as well as looking great.”
And according to Cedella the “Puma – Marley” pairing came along when she approached the Brands CEO and asked him why her company was never asked to design for Puma. Two weeks later, she was approached with the offer.
