The island nation of Jamaica gained independence from Britain 50 years ago this year. On August 5, 2012, on what could be our proudest day yet Huddersfield will celebrate Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence in style.
The island nation of Jamaica gained independence from Britain 50 years ago this year. On August 5, 2012, around 15,000 people from Huddersfield and further afield will celebrate Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence in style at Greenhead Park, Huddersfield.
Kicking off at 11.30am and ending at 9.30pm the festivities will be staged in sections:
• Gospel Service & Opening address ceremony
• Dance performances
• D.J’s & Comedy Hosts
• Local Music Showcase
• Reggae Music Showcase (Artists TBC)
• Televised London 2012 Athletics on Giant screens in the park.
The organisers JIF50 (Jamaica Independence Festival 50) & Jamaica National Council Huddersfield hope the celebrations will highlight the positives of Jamaica - the warmth and creativity of its people, the vibrancy of the culture, the brilliance and talent of their people. The event aims to promote integration and cohesion within the local community, bringing together people of all ages, a range of cultures and backgrounds in one place, in a celebratory atmosphere.
Johnny Flowers the Event Co-ordinator says “Jamaica 50 will be amazing and memorable, it will be a wellspring of national pride, energising Jamaicans everywhere especially here in Huddersfield and it will engage the attention of the world”.
The high point of the celebrations will coincide with the 100m Men Final of the Olympic Games in London when Jamaican athletes will hopefully demonstrate Jamaica’s golden moment. Jamaicans are looking forward to raising the black, green and gold flag in the Olympic Stadium in London and across the world. “JIF50 Huddersfield will be a spectacular celebration of Jamaican Culture and Athletic achievement that will bring together our multicultural community in a joyful experience that will be remembered for years to come.”
Leader of Kirklees Council, Cllr Mehboob Khan says;
“I am delighted to support the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence. The Jamaican community have been settled in Huddersfield since 1950s and have made Britain their home. I am looking forward to experiencing a range of exciting and colourful events. Local people will be able to join in with the fantastic celebrations during the summer in Huddersfield to mark this very important occasion which will also give a tourist boost to our local economy.”
JIF50 intends to give the proceeds of the event back to communities and individuals in need both locally and overseas. It is hoped that a significant amount of money will be raised for the chosen charities; The Forget Me Not Trust in Huddersfield and Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica. The money will be raised through sponsorship, income and donations generated through the event. For more information visit the website:
