TEST The Drum in partnership with Nu Century Arts delivers the first phase (script development) of a dance theatre work they are creating for the Jamaica 50: Birmingham 2012 cultural Olympiad celebrations.
Marisol, a mixed heritage woman born in England, has given up her well-paid corporate executive job to embark on a visit to Jamaica and to have a child with a Caribbean man. There she meets Sambhota, formerly the owner of a glamorous dance hall that relegated Black women to servants and entertainers, but now a Rastafarian. In his new consciousness, Sambhota has closed the club for the past seven years, waiting for his queen. But will Marisol’s journey of rediscovery come about hand-in-hand with Sambhota, trying to reopen his nightclub on a more conscious basis, or with Eugene Williams MP, the debonair Jamaican landowner?
This is your chance to contribute to the development of the script in a post-show Q&A with the creative team.
