Osmond Yaw, an employee of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company

Workers placing their colleague, Osmond Yaw, onto a stretcher.

(GT&T) who was among several persons conducting extensive work for the company in Lethem, sustained injuries after being struck by a fallen utility pole at around 14:30hrs (2:30pm) yesterday.
It was reported that Yaw was strapped to a pole onto which he was attaching telephone wires when the pole, which was reportedly rotten, came crashing down with him, pinning him to the ground.
Kaieteur News understands that the man, who appeared to be in his early thirties, was pulled from under the pole  and rushed to the Lethem Hospital where he was admitted, and is currently being treated for his injuries.
This publication was told that the crew was also replacing rotten poles but did not realize that the one Yaw was working on was also rotten.
Efforts to contact GT&T for a comment on the matter as well as the man’s condition proved futile.
