Most people are not aware of Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms. The powerful (yes! powerful) West African kingdom of Ghana prospered from its gold trade; Arab writers later called Ghana “the land of gold” because of its great wealth. The Arab writer Al Yakubi described the king of Ghana as “The king of Ghana is a great king. In his territory are mines of gold, and under him a number of kingdoms, among them the kingdom of Sugham, and the kingdom of Sama. In all this country there is gold”. Indeed, the kingdom of Ghana was so rich that the dogs in the king’s palace wore collars made out of gold! Or that the city of Timbuktu, on the Niger River, was a centre of learning. Or that the wealthy empires of Songhai and Benin dominated the area. The Songhai Empire grew up around the city of Gao in the 14th century AD. It expanded rapidly under the Muslim ruler Askia Muhammad (known as Askia the Great) from the late 15th century.
