- amin88 Welcome sister to this brilliant and awesome site! It’s brilliant because there are so many different people on this site that are just waiting to meet and connect to; it’s awesome because there’s so much going on … and that’s just on my profile page alone! Anyway sister, on the site as a whole there’s online chat with friends, jobs, events and even Black History courses that I think has got to be a must for anyone wanting to know about Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms! You see most people are not aware of Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms and famous female personalities. Now, one of these was Amina of Zaria (also known as Amina Sukhera or Aminatu) who was a Muslim princess of the royal family of Zazzau (located in present-day north central Nigeria), one of the seven Hausa city states. The Arabic female name ‘Amina’ means truthful, trustworthy and honest. She came from a tradition that had nurtured strong, politically active women. Her grandfather was the king of Zazzau and Amina would often be present when the king held court. However, in 1535 her grandfather died in 1535 and his brother became the new ruler and Amina still continued to attend court. She was born c. 1533 and is estimated to have died around 1610. Amina’s great-uncle ruled for only a year before he died at which time Amina’s mother, Bakwa Turunku, by acting decisively and quickly seized the throne. She changed the name of the city-state Zazzau to Zaria, after her youngest daughter. Now, her attachment to her grandfather and her early years seeing him rule no doubt had a significant influence on her and so while other young women were perhaps learning how to be wives and mothers, Amina decided to continue learning how to be a ruler. In 1566 Amina’s mother died and although Amina was the heir apparent, her mother’s younger brother ruled for about 10 years. Now, it was during her uncle’s reign that Princess Amina became a superb warrior. Amina was determined to be the next ruler and prove that she could protect her state and its people as well as keeping Zaria strong and independent and to maintain its position as the center of the Saharan and Sudanese trade routes. Around 1576 Amina’s uncle died and she became queen and proved herself to be one of the great Hausa rulers and warriors, reigning for 34 years and more importantly, building a prosperous empire. This is just another example how African women played a very important part in the building of a great African empire and one that the African people should be proud of. I hope everyone will see this platform as a means of uniting people and bringing together minds and thoughts with a view to building a better future not just for our children but for ourselves as well with hope, peace and unity. Anyway, on your travels sister please do check out my profile details where you’ll find several links of great interest about African unity; sister even my avatar says something for the African people in this respect. Also, you’ll see the friends there; they really are a great bunch so please get in touch with them; they’ll be glad to be your friend! One Africa! One Nation! One God Almighty! One Billion Strong! What more can I say sister?

- rassie Welcome sister to this wonderful, cool site! Well, it’s got to be cool if it’s got me on it! Anyway, glad you joined us. It’s packed with equally wonderful and interesting people (including me!). There’s a lot going on like online chat with friends, jobs, events and even Black History courses that I think has got to be a must for anyone wanting to know about Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms. The powerful (yes! powerful) West African kingdom of Ghana, which had dominated West Africa for centuries since around 500, prospered from its gold trade; Arab writers later called Ghana “the land of gold” because of its great wealth; the Ghana Empire increased its wealth through its gold trade with the Muslim North Africa and other smaller cultures grew up such as at Igbo-Ukwu. Indeed, the kingdom of Ghana was so rich that the dogs in the king’s palace wore collars made out of gold! Trade was important in West Africa and this increased when traders began to use camels to cross the Sahara Desert with gold and salt. In the grasslands south of the Sahara, city states grew rich and powerful. Many of their kings adopted the Islamic religion. Mansa Musa, the king of Mali, went to Mecca in Arabia in the 14th Century, paying everyone with gold on the way. Other states grew up in the forest areas nearer to the coast. These were also rich, from trading in gold, leather goods and cloth. City states on the east coast, such as Kilwa and Sofala, sent ivory, gold, copper and gum by sea to Arabia, India and China. The gold came from the powerful inland state of Zimbabwe. Kilwa had grand houses and a large Muslim mosque built of coral stone. Wow what a rich and great history! … that is until … well I think you know what happened next. Regrettably, during the 16th Century Portuguese guns and ships destroyed the wealth of these coastal states. Needless to say the Portuguese empire was based on slavery. Anyway, whatever you do, please do check out my profile details where you’ll be surprised at how much is on this single page! Even my avatar and ‘status’ say something for the African people. Here, you’ll also see friends listed; they really are a great bunch so please get in touch with them; they’ll be glad to be your friend; there’s also an uplifting message for the African people and indeed for all of mankind that quite frankly is an answer to many of the world’s problems if only people took the time and effort to read it properly! One Africa! One Nation! One Billion Strong! One God Almighty! That says it all! Need I say more sister?

- CirocStar Welcome brother! If I were to say to you that this is a fantastic site. Or an amazing site. Or a brilliant site. It would be an under statement. For this site is packed with equally fantastic, amazing and brilliant people (including, of course, me but I come with an additional ‘thought provoking’ category!!!). Anyway, there’s a lot going on like online chat with friends, jobs, events and even Black History courses that I think has got to be a must for anyone wanting to know about Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms. West Africa was part of a major trading network [long before the arrival of Europeans]. The empire of Benin lay further south and was founded in the 11th century. Its success was based on commerce – the trade with Western Sudan for copper and other goods. By the 15th century Benin was a major trading empire. I hope everyone will see this platform as a means of uniting people and bringing together minds and thoughts with a view to building a better future not just for our children but for ourselves as well with hope, peace and unity. - FRX Welcome brother! Well, whatever it is you’re looking whether it be friendship or networking, then you’ve certainly come to the right site. This premier site is packed with fantastic, amazing and brilliant people (including, of course, me but I come with an additional ‘thought provoking’ category!!!). One of these was the Arab scholar and geographer Al-Idrisi, born in North Africa in 1100, who wrote about the wealthy Ghanaian Empire. Indeed, the kingdom of Ghana was so rich that the dogs in the king’s palace wore collars made out of gold! In the 14th Century another Arab scholar, Ibn Battuta, in his book entitled ‘The Travels of Ibn Battuta’ wrote “The clothes of its [people of Walata] are of fine Egyptian material. The women are extremely beautiful and are more important than the men”. This type of history shows the great history of Africa. Indeed, such is the history of Africa that there is evidence that some Africans went to China, possibly to trade and in doing so may have crossed the Atlantic before Columbus! - neroli Welcome sister to this brilliant site where truly there’s a lot going on like online chat with friends, jobs, events and even Black History courses that I think has got to be a must for anyone wanting to know about Africa’s glorious past with its great empires and kingdoms! Africa has a great and wonderful history and one that we should be proud of ... in fact it's a history that is often forgotten deliberately and other aspects of Africa's history highlighted ... when women lived with honour and dignity and fought for what was right and freedom ... and despite its benefits is something that is considered not of modern times and doesn’t fit in … in this respect we should mention at least one of the many in the fight for Africa’s struggle for freedom. In 1623 the king of the Ndongo kingdom in Angola died and the next year his sister Nzinga became queen. The African leaders became alarmed at the number of people seized by European slave traders. The ruler of the kingdom of Ndongo in Angola, Queen Nzinga, fiercely resisted, partly because of reports of terrible conditions under which slaves were shipped to America. Inland, strong states still prospered such as the growing Yoruba Empire of Oyo in Nigeria. Now, Queen Nzinga was soon at war with the Portuguese because she refused to supply as many slaves as they wanted for shipment to their colonies in Brazil. Indeed, when Queen Nzinga went to negotiate with the Portuguese she was refused a chair and so sat down on one of her attendants. Queen Nzinga made alliances against the Portuguese with neighbouring states. After the Portuguese forced her out of Ndongo Queen Nzinga took over the neighbouring kingdom of Matamba and fought on. At her death in 1663, Matamba was still independent. In East Africa, Portuguese power declined as Omani Muslims from the Persian Gulf allied with northern trading centres along the coast. These examples show the great history of Africa. I hope everyone will see this platform as a means of uniting people and bringing together minds and thoughts with a view to building a better future not just for our children but for ourselves as well with hope, peace and unity.
