What does adoption mean? Adoption provides permanent families for children who can no longer live with their parents or any member of their birth family. When the courts make an Adoption Order, as the adoptive parent you’ll be recognised as the child’s legal and only parent, with the same rights and responsibilities as all other parents. We view adoption as a stable commitment that provides children with the support of a loving home throughout their lives. Who needs adopting? Children of every age and background need families. Since few babies are given up for adoption by their birth parents, concern about parenting is the primary reason that children need new families. Sadly, some children will have experienced neglect or abuse during their early lives. They may have been in foster care for a long time and feel very uncertain about their future. These early experiences can affect their development in complex and challenging ways. In Enfield, we believe that people from all communities can make wonderful adoptive parents. To meet the racial and cultural backgrounds of our children, we need to hear from all kinds of people – black families, people in mixed relationships or from a mixed parentage. We don’t look for specific qualities or talents – we want people who can make a lifelong commitment to a child who needs permanence, stability and a loving home.
