Terrence Higgins Trust is launching a series of HIV information leaflets for African communities to coincide with World AIDS Day on December 1st. Comedienne Gina Yashere is backing the publications, which have also been supported by Barclays.

MORE YOUNG PEOPLE AND VULNERABLE WITNESSES SEEK SUPPORT IN COURT, SAYS UK CRIME CHARITY Print E-mail

Increasing numbers of young people and witnesses at risk of intimidation are receiving help and support to help them cope with giving evidence during criminal trials, according to new figures from Victim Support released today. Nearly 5,000 more vulnerable and intimidated witnesses (including children and victims of domestic violence ) were helped in the last twelve months by the charity’s Witness Service, bringing the total to nearly 52,000. Over 28,000 young people under 18 were helped by the court-based service, which is an increase of nearly 4,000 on last year.

FOOTBALL star Rio Ferdinand has launched a national anti-knife campaign in memory of stab victim Damilola Taylor with the message, Let's Bring Peace To The Streets. Dami's dad Richard Taylor,London Mayor Ken Livingstone,and Met Chief Sir Ian Blair attended the event at City Hall yesterday. The Respect Your Life Not A Knife campaign aims to get two million young people to sign pledges not to carry weapons.

TONY BLAIR MP, Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, in an article in New Nation today wrote:  The transatlantic slave trade stands as one of the most inhuman enterprises in history.  At a time when the capitals of Europe and America championed the Enlightenment of man, their merchants were enslaving a continent.  Racism, not the rights of man, drove the horrors of the triangular trade.  Some 12 million were transported.  Some three million died.

With the importance of parenting high on the political agenda, the first programme to support African Caribbean fathers is being launched on Wednesday 29 November by Barnardo’s, the Babyfather Alliance and Fathers Direct. The event will take place 11.00-1.00 including buffet lunch. The new African Caribbean Fatherhood Training Programme is a unique initiative that has been developed by African Caribbean fathers, and those who work with them, to help encourage and develop parenting skills in a culturally relevant and engaging way.
