CORONATION Street is a turn-off for black and ethnic minority viewers, according to a three-year academic study. Despite prominent characters such as shop boss Dev and Sunita appearing in recent years, researchers found the long-running soap was of "little interest" to ethnic minorities.

BNP leader Nick Griffin was today cleared of race hate charges. The 47-year-old Cambridge graduate was found not guilty at Leeds Crown Court of using words or behaviour intended to stir up racial hatred during a speech he made in Keighley, West Yorks, in 2004.

Gun amnesty yields 400 weapons Print E-mail

More than 400 weapons have been handed to police in Manchester in the wake of the murder of 15-year-old Jessie James and a rise in shootings across the city. Greater Manchester Police launched the month-long hand-in to reduce the number of illegal guns, ammunition and other firearms on the streets.
