Birmingham's schools can provide a lesson for colleges across the country in how to encourage children from different ethnic groups to mix, a city MP told the House of Commons. Khalid Mahmood (Lab Perry Barr) invited Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, to come to the city and see for himself. He was speaking in a House of Commons debate on education reforms, including new powers for Oftsed inspectors to grade schools on whether they promote "community cohesion". Attention has focused on the impact this will have on faith schools, which will be expected to ensure their pupils mix with youngsters from other religions.

POLICE in south Birmingham are warning drivers to steer clear of car-jackers in an attempt to stop vehicle crime. Teams of police officers, police community support officers and Specials from Belgrave Road Command unit will be patrolling on foot and on motorcycles at major junctions in south Birmingham. As well as deterring potential thieves, officers will be opening the doors of cars with goods in plain view when they are stopped at the lights to give them crime prevention advice.

Michael Blake has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Daniel Quilliam and will serve a minimum of 30 years. On 12 April 2005 Blake, who was the former boyfriend of Daniel Qulliam's girlfriend, sent numerous texts and calls in a bid to renew their relationship. Mr Quilliam became annoyed and repeatedly grabbed his girlfriend's mobile telephone to terminate the calls.

The tables were turned when Ricky Mandeville threw beer over an innocent group of young Asian men that he and his friends had been shouting drunken abuse at. For it was Mandeville who ended up calling the police as he took refuge on a garage roof after two of the Asian men, who had earlier been to cricket practice, chased him with their bats. |

AN ANTI-gun campaigner today welcomed new laws to crack down on the sale of replica guns. Hall Green Labour MP Steve McCabe exposed the on-line trade in realistic looking fake guns two years ago when he handed a dossier to then Home Secretary David Blunkett. Now his battle against violent crime has taken a major step forward as the Violent Crime Reduction Bill passed through the House of Commons.
