A Slave’s Story’ Private Performance In the Presence of Rev. Jesse Jackson Print E-mail

Following the success of its debut at the Milton Keynes Theatre, A Slave’s Story, a play produced by The Arts Collective, has been given a unique opportunity to perform before a private audience in the presence of the Civil Rights Activist, Reverend Jesse Jackson.  The play will then be showcased to the general public at The Peepul Centre, Leicester on Friday 24th August.

A Slave’s Story’ follows the lives of eight generations of one family whose tale of survival and freedom is passionately passed from mother to daughter beginning in African Tribelands in 1781 until it reaches modern metropolitan Britain in 2007. Ultimately a tale of redemption, ‘A Slave’s Story’ offers a night of poetry, music, dance and drama.

The historic debut of the play at the renowned Milton Keynes Theatre was not only being the first black British production to be staged there, but totally sold out on its one-night only performance to  the surprise of many of its critics.  The performance at Milton Keynes was so popular that the play will make its London debut on Sunday 15th September at The Broadway Theatre, Lewisham – home to many groundbreaking ethnic productions.

Yaw Asiyama, writer and producer of A Slave’s Story, explains, "I felt driven to write this play. It had been living in my heart and soul for a while... the emotional reaction of all the players and participants when we took the play to small local theatres made me aware of what we had. It became almost compulsory we perform it again on a bigger scale so that more people could hear our story.”

A Slave’s Story proposes to tour venues in historic slave ports around the UK such as Hull, Bristol and Liverpool and has been given an opportunity to visit Ghana in October as a part of an education tour and to celebrate Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

The Milton Keynes Theatre Showcases Its First Black British Production Print E-mail

The Milton Keynes Theatre has been dubbed ‘Britain’s most popular theatre’ due to its high booking rate and is the largest theatre in the UK outside of London. On Friday 29th June 2007, The Milton Keynes Theatre will showcase ‘A Slave’s Story’ – an emotionally charged and thought provoking play written by Yaw Asiyama. It will also be the first time a Black British production will be staged there.
With 2007 marking the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, the staging of ‘A Slave’s Story’ in this popular theatre is especially poignant.

‘A Slave’s Story’ is an intimate and spiritual expression that follows eight generations of one family whose tale is passionately passed from mother to daughter beginning in the African Tribe lands in 1781 until it reaches modern metropolitan Britain in 2007. ‘A Slave Story’ is ultimately a tale of redemption, as this family seeks freedom through courage, stubborn memory and a fierce loyalty to each other.

The all-woman cast comprises of over thirteen community actors including six local children, a gospel choir, twenty professional dancers and drummers and a band of seven musicians, directed by the renowned musician Peter Daley.

Roy Nevitt, Chair of Milton Keynes Theatre & Gallery Company says “with Yah Asiyama’s work, we have an opportunity to bring the black experience into the mainstream. His Play will stimulate thought, increase knowledge and understanding of our country’s past; move its audiences with its humanity and, with its positive and life enhancing messages mediated through genuine artistic expression, fresh and on-going debate about race relations and contribution to social cohesion.”

Yaw Asiyama, of Ghanaian heritage, established his theatre production company ‘The Collective Arts’ in 1991 to provide access to the professional stage for semi-professional and amateur actors. The resounding success of A Slave’s Story at local venues caught the attention of Milton Keynes Theatre Directors and Yaw was given a-one-night-only slot at this prestigious venue.
Tickets for this ground breaking production have been reasonably priced to give everyone a chance to share in the experience. For ticket information contact the Milton Keynes Theatre box office on 0870 060 6652 or visit www.miltonkeynestheatre.com.

Submit Content Important to you

A second teenager is appearing in court charged with the murder of 14-year-old Paul Erhahon.

A 13-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with Paul's murder and the attempted murder and grievous bodily harm of a 15-year-old boy.

Magistrates remanded him to secure accommodation until an appearance before the Old Bailey on April 24.

A 14-year-old boy will face the same charges when he appears before Waltham Forest Youth Court on Wednesday.

Paul died from a stab wound to the heart after he was attacked in the foyer of a block of flats in Leytonstone, east London, on Friday.

His 15-year-old friend also suffered stab wounds but is now in a stable condition at an east London hospital.

A second 14-year-old boy is still in custody at an east London police station.

A 19-year-old man who was also arrested has been bailed to appear at an east London police station in June, pending further inquiries.

Paul is the seventh Londoner under 16 to be murdered since the end of January.

He attended Kingsford Community School in Beckton, east London - the same school as 15-year-old Adam Regis, who was stabbed to death last month.
