The Liberal Democrats have welcomed the rise in the number of women and people from minority ethnic groups appointed to judicial office but warned that there is still a long way to go.

Commenting on the new figures from the Department of Constitutional Affairs, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:

"These figures are very welcome. Increasing the diversity amongst judicial appointments is a crucial step in giving England and Wales a judiciary which is representative of society today.

"However, diversity on our court benches still has a long way to go. The Government must not become complacent. Liberal Democrats want to see more women and people from black and minority ethnic communities gaining prominent roles across the legal profession as a whole. We must make further progress in every year ahead."
