CHARITY CAMPAIGN CURE FOR A WORRIER NATION, As we enter 2007, international conflict and education top the league of Black worries for the future, according to a new survey 1 released today by the Get on Board trustee campaign. 25 - 44 year olds are likely to be bigger worriers about the future than the older generation.
The survey found that amongst 25 - 44 year old people from an ethnic minority background: Nearly a quarter placed the future education of our children at the top of their list of worries A fifth had concerns about international conflict; and More than one in eight were most worried about environmental issues Interestingly, people feel that they can make the greatest impact in solving these problems by raising awareness and donating money. What they are much less aware of is the potential of trusteeship as a way to make a difference, gain experience and get satisfaction. The survey also reveals that two-thirds of Black people are frustrated in their jobs - surprisingly, many do not crave an easier life, but want more appreciation (69 %), influence (25%), challenges (30%) and to do something worthwhile (17%). Get on Board aims to tell people about the exciting and rewarding nature of trusteeship, while bringing in a new generation of trustees to manage the country’s charities and their funds which total £39 billion 2. Body Shop founder, Dame Anita Roddick is herself a charity trustee of Body & Soul, a London based AIDS charity. Dame Anita said: "Being a charity trustee is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to a cause you care about. Everyone has skills and experiences that could be useful to charities - from marketing skills to understanding the mental health system or simply knowing your local area well. I think trusteeship is a golden opportunity to gain career experience and make important contacts outside of the workplace. It's a responsible position but there are huge potential rewards." Jolanta Lasota from the Get on Board campaign said, “It’s ironic that while so many people across the country are facing 2007 with greater anxiety about how to shape the future, the voluntary sector is crying out for new trustees to make a difference. We want to encourage people to use their knowledge and skills as trustees, gaining huge personal satisfaction, new experiences and the chance to have an impact on the causes they care about.” The Get on Board campaign is being run in England by The Governance Hub together with the Charity Commission and Volunteering England.
