The Government is setting up a powerful new Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR), which will bring together the work of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC).  It will also have responsibilities to promote human rights, and to combat discrimination on the grounds of:  age; sexual orientation; and religion or belief.

A new Commission, with human rights at its heart, is an opportunity to build on the great achievements of the CRE, EOC and DRC, with an holistic and proactive approach to promoting equality – and, in particular, tackling multiple discrimination and exclusion.

The search is now on for a Chair and up to fourteen Commissioners to lead the new CEHR.  They will set the overall direction and decide priorities, and also serve as ‘Ambassadors’ for the Commission, forging positive working relationships across Government, the legal system, voluntary agencies and communities.

The role of CEHR Commissioner promises to be an exciting and important one – and the Government is keen to ensure that - collectively - the Commissioners are a diverse group.

Meg Munn, Deputy Minister for Women and Equality, said:

“The Government is committed to tackling discrimination and the CEHR will be a powerful body that will promote equality and help to stamp out discrimination in modern Britain.

“For the commission to really succeed and serve the people it represents it is vital that applicants for the commissioners jobs come from a variety of backgrounds and have first hand experience of discrimination.  I want to get the best people for the job who can use their experiences to ensure that the CEHR makes a real difference to people in communities all over the UK.”
