The winning entries in a new schools' art competition exploring Britishness were announced at the Royal Albert Hall (RAH) today. Young Brits at Art was launched in March this year as part of the Commission for Racial Equality's 30 year anniversary celebrations.
Judges including artists Emma Sergeant and Shani Rees James, and art critic, William Packer, unanimously decided to award first prize jointly to Tyler Davies of Rainham Mark Grammar School, Kent, Paul Huston of Hinwick Hall College, Wellingborough, and Enam Miah of Grange School, Oldham. Seven others students' works were highly commended. The competition, supported by UBS and the Royal Albert Hall, invited students aged 11 to 16 from schools in England, Scotland and Wales to create images which captured their thoughts and feelings about living in Britain today. Supporting statements were also included. The prize-winning entries were selected after judges whittled down more than 800 works to a shortlist of 100. The 100 pictures will be exhibited at the Royal Albert Hall between 17 October and 7 November 2006. The exhibition is to be kept by the CRE as a unique record of contemporary Britain as seen by young people, and used as an educational resource which can be taken on tour to towns and cities throughout Britain. Trevor Phillips, CRE Chair, said: "My congratulations go to the winners and all those who took part - the entries are incredibly impressive. These artists want us to hear and take note of what they have to say about Britain in 2006. People involved in the debate about Britishness have at times struggled forcefully about what it means, yet these young artists have managed to capture it in a variety of ways." Tutu Agyare, UBS Investment Bank Board Member and UK Diversity Advisor for Race, stated, "UBS is delighted to support the CRE's Young Brits at Art 2006 competition and awards ceremony, which aims to stimulate secondary school pupils' interest in cultural diversity. The competition is consistent with UBS's commitment to building a diverse culture of mutual respect, support and inclusion".
