On Friday 8th August the Council of Black Led Churches (CBLC) is proud to announce the inauguration of its first ever Black Achievement Awards.

By these awards CBLC aims to recognise and honour the high achievers in the black community who are far too often neglected and their efforts often going unrewarded. These awards will highlight the unsung heroes and heroines who play vital roles in enhancing the professionalism and dedication to duty to the African Caribbean and wider community. The awards recognise that they are succeeding in their own special ways, battling against negative stereotypes and erroneous ideas that often seem to prevail whenever there is a focus on the African Caribbean community.

The awards are not about getting the best grades, they are about individuals living their dreams even if that means going against the grain.  These are individuals who are prepared to put themselves out for others.  The awards are a celebration of achievement against the odds in many shapes or forms.

There are lots of statistics that highlight the negative images regarding African Caribbean young people such as underachievement in education, over representation in the unemployment figures, criminal justice and mental health figures. These awards will provide the evidence that there is significant majority who out weigh the minority of under-achievers who exist within all cultures.

Nominations have been submitted from various statutory and voluntary organisations. Members of the public have also had the opportunity to nominate individuals or groups who they feel deserve to be rewarded for their efforts. Those honoured with awards will have impacted the city of Birmingham, and sometimes beyond.  Many sections of the African Caribbean community will be represented in the awards.

The Achievement awards will provide an opportunity for inspirational stories to be heard by a wider audience, and will be showcased to inspire and open up opportunities for others.
