”InterAction is the kind of programme this country needs…a programme that shows our young leaders how to support the transformation of our nation’’  - Hon Kate Kainja, Minister of Education, Malawi

London, 13 June 2006 A new generation of leaders are to explore the challenges and opportunities they face in the 21st century through a unique programme that aims to transform relationships between communities in Africa and the UK.

Building on last year’s success, the British Council’s pioneering InterAction Leadership Programme is a transformational initiative that works with dynamic individuals who want to make a positive difference in their organisation, local community and society as a whole.

By recognising Africa’s contributions to the world, the programme will inspire participants to challenge assumptions about themselves, their environment and perceptions of the African continent.

So far, 630 participants have completed the course, in 19 African countries and the UK whilst a further 10,000 people have been engaged through outreach activities such as community networking and leadership exchanges.

InterAction is built around an innovative programme of peer learning, constructive dialogue and action by committed people who are passionate about Africa, its relationship with the UK, and leadership.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Questions of Difference, a UK-based consulting organisation specialising in transformation through leadership development, conflict management and cultural change.

British Council InterAction Programme Manager, Hugh Moffatt, said: `The programme works with the guiding principles of goodwill and good intent. By adopting an appreciative approach, participants can begin to activate their leadership potentials with renewed confidence, and play their part in developing a new perspective of Africa and its relationship with the United Kingdom in the 21st century.’

The seven month programme will involve one-to-one training, peer learning and a three-day pan-African conference attended by representatives from all countries to share experiences and broaden their networks with other African countries and Britain.

For further information and to download an application form, please visit: http://www.bc-interaction.org The closing date for applicants in the UK is 29 June, 2006. Please refer to the InterAction Website for details of African Programme deadlines. The InterAction Leadership Programme in the UK will run from September 2006 to March 2007.
