VIOLENT crime, robbery and domestic violence are the latest targets for police in Handsworth.

As part of Operation Momentum, the force-wide initiative aimed at tackling the rise in crime that traditionally occurs in the autumn months, officers made over 60 arrests and seized a number of offensive weapons including machetes, knuckledusters and lock knives.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of 174 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £200,000 and successfully seized over 30 uninsured vehicles thanks to ‘lock downs’, where road blocks are used to stop and survey traffic using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems.

Inspector Mohammed Hanif, from Thornhill Road police station, said “Operation Momentum has been a real success, with the right number of officers in the right places at the right time, securing success in the areas of violent crime and overall crime. There has been very positive response from the local community in relation to the high visibility policing and the relevant tactics used to combat the crime in the area.

“We will continue to use Momentum tactics and work with partnership agencies through out the year, to send a positive message to criminals that they are not welcome in and around north Birmingham.”

Schools, pubs and clubs around Handsworth were also targeted as part of crime prevention activity. High visibility patrols were also deployed to areas that faced an increase in anti-social behaviour.
