Lee Jasper invites young people to voice their views on the police

Race relations expert, Lee Jasper, will help Starlight Music Academy launch its six month Youth Empowerment Forum with a discussion on young people’s relationship with the police.  The first forum takes place on Friday 29 September 2006, 5.00 pm at Offley Road - off Brixton Road - SW9 0LS and will be filmed by Rice n Peas Productions.  
Both Lee Jasper and Starlight Music Academy Founder, Shanice Duffus are available for interview either face-to-face or by telephone.
 
In this first of six forums, young South Londoners are invited to share and compare their good and bad stories related to the police.  Their legal rights and positive ways to improve relationships with the police will also be discussed.  On the panel will be special guests selected for their insight and expertise on the matter, they include:

Each of the six Youth Empowerment Forums will take place on the last Friday of each month and will discuss issues ranging from education and gangs to religion and peer pressure. They all kick off with music and entertainment then young people will be given an opportunity to discuss important issues affecting their lives
 
Biography for Lee Jasper
Lee Jasper is the Director for Equalities and Policing, Mayor’s Office.  He is recognised by the European Union as one of only a handful of experts on race relations and equality issues, he is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Mayor’s vision of a prosperous capital city in which all communities can participate. 
 
Mr Jasper is chair of a number of independent committees and organisations tasked with addressing issues such as policing, voting rights, education, the criminal justice system, mental health, faith, cultural diversity and economic justice.
 
Mr Jasper was formerly the Director of The 1990 Trust, (1995 – 2000), a leading policy organisation on issues affecting African, Asian, and Caribbean communities in the UK and Europe.  Previous experience includes Senior Policy Advisor to the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA); Director of Development, the Mangrove Trust; Chair of Mangrove Community Association, Notting Hill; Secretary, Notting Hill Carnival; Press and Publicity Officer, Interval Housing Project, Rainer Foundation.  Member of the previous Home Secretary Jack Straw’s Race Relations Forum
 
Lee currently sits as Chair of many independent committees and organisations. He is the Chair of National Black Alliance, Operation Black Vote, Trident Independent Advisory Group and the Lambeth Police Consultative Group and the Lambeth Independent Advisory Group. He is Chair of the African and Caribbean Mental Health Commission. He is the National Secretary of the National Assembly Against Racism.  Lee was also a founder board member of the drop the debt campaign Jubilee 2000 Campaign and is a current member of the Black Jewish Forum. He also sits on the Criminal Justice Consultative Race Sub Group and is a School Governor of St Andrew’s School, Brixton, Lambeth and Kingswood Secondary School, Dulwich, Southwark.    He is also one of the Co-Chair’s of Communities on Line, a national organisation promoting Internet usage for social and economic justice.  Lee is an ex-board member of the Royal Commonwealth Society (1997-1999).   He is also the current President of the National Black Students Alliance.
