“Every sensible and good-hearted British person understands that we live in a diverse society and that Britain is better for it. “The Liberal Democrats purpose is to fight for a more just, tolerant and liberal Britain which recognises the right of every citizen to equal opportunity and equal treatment. “Those who seek to justify racism for political ends have no place in the modern Britain of today.” Commenting further, former Liberal Democrat President, Lord (Navnit) Dholakia said: “The BNP has shown its true colours. It is a racist organisation, which does not subscribe to equality of opportunity for all British citizens. “Over 70% of UK ethnic minorities were born in the United Kingdom, and are proud to be British. They make a substantial contribution towards the social, political and economic life of this country. “Please go out and vote against the BNP.” Liberal Democrat MEP, Saj Karim added: “To claim that only those of English, Scots, Irish or Welsh background are truly British has once again shown the BNP to be what they truly are - fundamentally racist. “Do the BNP believe that the Olympic gold medals won by Kelly Holmes and Amir Khan were not won by real British people?”

Responding to comments made by the BNP that non-whites in Britain are only British in the "civic sense", Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Menzies Campbell MP said: “Every British citizen is equal before the law. The rights of every person in this country are the same.
