A new guide that aims to help public sector bodies improve communication with ethnic minority audiences has been published by the Central Office of Information (COI). Produced on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government, 'Communicating with Communities' highlights the benefits of outreach activity. It looks at techniques such as field marketing, community development and participation.
Ross James, Head of the newly formed Diversity team at COI, says the aim of outreach work is to raise awareness of issues through personal relationships, credible information, trusted networks and feedback: "Outreach is a way to overcome language and culture barriers that may exist among ethnic minority communities. Taking a more targeted and local approach ensures ethnic minorities can access government services. The guide will help government departments reach audiences who may be excluded from other forms of communication," said Ross. The guide is based on the experience of outreach practitioners from public and private sectors.
