The competition attracts contestants from Caribbean and Commonwealth countries such as Grenada, Jamaica, Uganda, Kenya, Trinidad & Tobago, Zambia and much more. This year, titleholders from the previous years will be in attendance to support the contestants. Previous titleholders have made official visits to Spain, Jamaica, France, St Lucia, Germany (including the former East Germany), the Netherlands, Antigua, Anguilla, Barbados and, very shortly, Ghana. The contest was founded in December 1980 with the first Final taking place one year later. It is somewhat chastening to realise that most of this year’s contestants were not even born then.
“The prospects for the future are encouraging”, says Goodwin “I am not too far away from retirement age, which I hope to concentrate on writing the plays and books of poems I started some time ago, and am confident that the title will be in safe hands”.. On the 28th April, Hammersmith will be the home of the 25th Silver Jubilee Miss Caribbean and Commonwealth and current title holder Shaherah Williams is excited about the future of the competition. ‘I respect this competition because emphasis is not placed solely on your external beauty; founder/director Clayton Goodwin seeks young ladies who can aptly represent their country.’
