Bristol will receive upto £700,000 over a 2 year period as part of a new Government initiative aimed at reducing youth crime. Measures which could be funded under the Home Office cash are street-based teams of youth workers and ex-gang members to tackle groups of young people involved in crime and disorder and after-school patrols. The announcement of the funding which will target 69 local authorities in England follows the publication by the Government in July of the Youth Crime Action Plan. This sets out a range of measures aimed at tackling youth crime including touch enforcement, non-negotiable support and prevention. The money is targeted at areas selected on the basis of a ranking of deprivation; youth crime and perception of youth anti-social behaviour. All parts of England will be offered some funding under the plan with £56.5 million being spent in all. Bristol will receive an immediate £65,000 to be spent this year on street-based teams, after-school patrols and Operation Staysafe, or on providing intensive support for families. An additional £25,000 will also be available to provide positive activities for young people on Fridays and Saturday nights in communities where crime and anti-social behaviour are a particular concern. Councillor Derek Pickup, Executive Member for Care, Tackling Deprivation and Crime, said: “Anti-social behaviour by young people is a major concern for people in Bristol, as it is in towns and cities across the country and the announcement of extra funding to help tackle the problem is welcome news. “Bristol developed a national reputation for the success of its approach to tackling anti-social behaviour and this additional money will enable us to build on work done to date, something which will be welcomed by local communities.” Other measures which could be funded under the Crime Action Plan are: * Increased high-visibility police patrols during after-school hours * Providing more positive, diversionary activities for young people * Using safeguarding laws to remove young people from the street at night Trackback(0)
