A West Midlands recruitment consultancy has led by example in a national diversity initiative. Plum Personnel in Solihull were the first recruitment agency in the UK to sign up for the initial Diversity Charter and Pledge, a partnership between Committed2Equality (c2e), Birmingham Professional DiverCity and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Following the success of the pledges, REC has unveiled ‘Diversity Assured Recruitment’ – a new auditing process to help recognise and encourage diversity in recruitment.

Plum Personnel director Susie Ankrett said: “The successful outcome of the audit reinforces the core values of Plum Personnel which are about working with honesty and integrity.

“We know our clients benefit from an enhanced recruitment service and we are delighted to be the first recruitment company in the country to achieve the status.”

Aaron Reid, executive director at Birmingham Professional DiverCity, which helps professional services sector manage and value diversity, welcomed the new kite-mark in the recruitment industry.

“The West Midlands region continues to lead the way in UK diversity, in particular Birmingham which is to become one of the first ethnic minority-majority cities in the UK.

“We are pleased to work with REC to deliver the ‘Diversity Assured’ health-check, as this means both employers and candidates can embrace the opportunities diversity can bring to the workplace.”

The launch of the new service coincides with the start of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities, which aims to enhance access to employment and to promote the benefits of diversity in all countries with the European Union.

Commenting on the launch of the Diversity Assured service, Marcia Roberts, the REC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “There is a real opportunity for UK employers to move beyond good intentions and legal compliance towards delivering effective diversity strategies that result in tangible change within the workplace. Better recruitment procedures that fully embrace diversity are a key part of this process.”
