Trevon Thomas an Illegal immigrant from Trinidad was jailed for 30 years yesterday for shooting a trainee policewoman including 15 years concurrent for possession of the firearm with intent to endanger life. He fired at Notts officer Rachael Bown in Lenton, notts in the early hours of February 14 as she and a colleague looked for a burglary suspect.
The rookie officer, who was nearing the end of her training, spent five hours in surgery which has left her with a 32cm scar down her front. Twelve inches of her bowel had to be removed. Thomas, 24, of Melford Road, Bilborough, was found guilty yesterday of attempted murder and possession of the firearm used to shoot her. Nottingham Crown Court heard he was originally from Trinidad and entered the UK in February 2000 with a six month visitor's visa, which was not renewed. Judge Michael Stokes, QC, ruled out a life sentence due to Thomas' lack of convictions and because he will be deported after he has serviced his sentence. "Those two officers (PC Bown and PC Foster) were doing their duty. The court too must do its duty and demonstrate that those who behave as you behave will receive severe punishment. "I am satisfied that your continued presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good. "I will recommend that you are deported after half your sentence. "Gunning down a police officer with murderous intent demands a sentence of the utmost severity." |
