|
This Tuesday, 5th December, young volunteers, aged 18-25, from the UK, South Africa and Nigeria with be joining up with volunteers from Indonesia, Kazakhstan and India to take part in community activities around London to celebrate International Volunteers Day.
The 100 volunteers are half-way through their six-month Global Xchange which brings together young people from the UK and developing countries. The five teams have spent three months in one of their exchange communities, volunteering over 6000 hours to local projects. They are now on their way to the second leg of the exchange where they'll give another 6000 hours to worthwhile causes. On international volunteers day the volunteers will give one day to special projects in London which will include Groundwork, the environmental charity, citizenship classes in a Harpenden school, a young people's sports project in Southwark, and a disability project with Hammersmith Volunteer Bureau. Global Xchange, which is run by VSO, the British Council and CSV, aims to bring young people from all over the world together to learn about their own countries and other cultures. Global Xchange supports young people to become global citizens who are committed to making positive changes in their communities. The five current exchanges are between: Taldykorgan (Kazakhstan) & Hounslow (UK). Gatwick (UK) & Kotri (India). Birmingham (UK) & Makassar (Indonesia). Calabar (Nigeria) & Edinburgh (UK). Selby (UK) & Queenstown (South Africa). The five teams make up the fourth phase of Global Xchange. Planning is already underway on phase five with exchanges starting in March between the UK and Mongolia, Malawi, Kenya, and the Philippines.
