East London based carnival and design company Kinetika presents Ti-Jean and His Brothers at the Unicorn Theatre, Southwark, London on Friday 27th at 7pm and Saturday 28th April at 3pm & 7pm. Based on the play by Derek Walcott the show is an exploration of freedom and a tribute to all those who have contributed to emancipation, independence and the development of Caribbean carnival in the UK. Ti-Jean succeeds where his brothers have failed when he takes on the devil and beats him at his own game through intuition and wit.The show is a large scale spectacular using a mixture of dance, theatre and high octane live percussion and brass.A cast of 40 young people from local schools in Southwark, Lambeth & Lewisham will perform in large scale extravagant costumes, accompanied by three giant puppets over 15 feet tall, to create a unique event that pushes the boundaries of carnival and theatre. Ali Pretty, Artistic Director of Kinetika says: “Performing Ti-Jean and his Brothers is a great opportunity for all the participants involved to express how we have stretched the art of music and theatre and taken the beauty of Carnival to new depths. Not only will this show reflect key political and historical messages, particularly for communities in London, it also promises to be a celebration of self expression, creativity and empowerment for all audiences to enjoy.” Tickets are available now from the Unicorn Theatre box office on 020 7645 0560.
