A MAN accused of shooting dead a drug dealer during a robbery was the intended victim, a court heard. Daniel Springer is accused of shooting cannabis dealer Matthew Smith, 21, in the chest after trying to rob him in a car park. But David Blake, a close friend of the defendant, told the Old Bailey that Springer had to run for his life when a mystery gunman started firing at him.

Mr Smith was killed in a car park at the junction of Ellison Road and Colmer Road, Streatham, on January 9. Springer, 21, along with Omar Parchment, 25, and Jason Campbell, 23, denies murder and robbery.

Mr Blake, 22, claimed his friend was innocent, and said Springer called him after the shooting sounding "shaky". "He said he went to go and hook up a link for some weed, a guy named Wesley," Mr Blake said. "As he was waiting, some short guy came and fired a shot at him and he said he just ran.

"Daniel said Wesley had tried to set him up because he never got a call from him afterwards to see if he was all right."

Mr Blake said Springer was so shaken up by the near miss that he offered his friend some marijuana to calm him down and later walked him to the bus stop.

Mr Blake said he had gone to school with Wesley, whose street name was "Corrupt" and who had a reputation for being involved with guns.

Springer, Campbell and Parchment have been identified as being behind the shooting by a friend who was at the scene but played no part in the robbery, the court has heard.

Springer, of Glennie Road, Streatham; Campbell, of Northcote Road, Selhurst; and Parchment, of Station Road, South Norwood, all deny murder and robbery.

The trial continues.
