Every year the BBC honours an outstanding African football player with the African Footballer of the Year Award. The award has been received by Mohamed Barakat (Egypt) in 2005, Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria) in 2003 and 2004 and El Hadji Diouf (Senegal) in 2002

The competition highlights the achievements of African players over the last 12 months and voters have until the end of November to nominate the player who they feel deserves the accolade. Players will then be short listed and a second round of voting will begin.
