The Charlton Athletic Race Equality (CARE) Partnership Print E-mail
The CARE Partnership tackles racism and social exclusion, while promoting diversity in the community. Young people from across Greenwich's diverse community came together for an inter-faith, cross-cultural football tournament on Saturday, 9 December. Part of the Football for Unity programme, the event gave around 150 young people, aged 16 – 25, the chance to compete for the Charlton Athletic Racial Equality (CARE) Unity Cup.

What happened?

The matches took place at the Woolwich Waterfront. Teams were selected in a non-traditional way to bring members of different communities together and help develop positive relationships.

Councillor Kanta Patel, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion and Justice, and Councillor John Fahy, Cabinet Member for Culture and Olympics, gave opening speeches and blew the whistle to start the first game.

The tournament was won by the CARE Unity Cup Grey Team.

Promoting inclusion

Councillor John Fahy said:

"Greenwich is very proud to host another Football for Unity tournament. This great initiative is an example of how sport can be used to bring different communities together, establish links and promote inclusion.

"More than this, the tournament underlines much of the work being done in Greenwich to promote good community relations as the borough gets ready for the 2012 Olympic Games."
