Carnival PicThe capital is gearing up for Notting Hill Carnival, one of the key events in London's calendar, which is eagerly anticipated by Londoners, as well as visitors to the city.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone said: 'This year's Notting Hill Carnival will be another opportunity for Londoners to come together in unity and to show their enjoyment of London's diversity and rich cultural heritage.

Southwark Victim SupportRACE hate cases have rocketed since the 7/7 bombings, a study has shown. Victim Support Southwark (VSS) has been swamped with pleas for help from people suffering racial harassment and religious intolerance in the past month. The service had 43 cases of harassment compared to 23 the same time last year. VSS borough manager Pat Green said that while not all the victims thought their suffering was a direct result of the attacks, racists may be using the climate of fear as an excuse.

Sandwell CollegeA Black Country college is at the centre of a race row after being accused of " institutionalised racism" by union officials.

Black and Asian staff at Sandwell College are getting a "raw deal" when it comes to promotion and training opportunities, college lecturers' union NATFHE has claimed. The union also highlighted disproportionately high levels of disciplinary action against students from ethnic backgrounds and a lack of non-white staff in management positions.

The college has denied the charges and said it was committed to removing "all forms of racism".

Met PolicePOLICE have named a man stabbed and beaten to death by a 10-strong gang outside a nightclub. Charles Owusu Anokye was robbed by the thugs as he lay dying in St Matthew's Peace Gardens, Brixton.

The 23-year-old care assistant, from Streatham Vale, had been at the Mass Club below St Matthew's Church in Effra Road before he was murdered.
